ANCIENT CLASSICS IN MINIATURE
Several Greek and Roman classics of ancient times have been published in editions
de minimus. In MBN 27 we discussed and pictured miniature editions of
Boethius, a Roman Philosopher of the 6th century. And in MBN 34 we took
note of the famous Cicero. This present article concerns itself with mini-editions
of other ancient classic authors, some famous and some obscure.
The first small printed editions were published by the famous Dutch family of
Elzevir (or Elsevier). Louis Elzevir was publisher to Leyden University and had
founded the firm in the late 16th century. In 1629 Elzevir brought out their famed
small 32mo editions with engraved title-pages, measuring scarcely 4 inches in
height. This small format was indeed an innovation, and their printings became
so popular that books printed by others in this size came to be know as
