rare set, since all the other sizes
are six-volume sets. These were
published in 1861 by Breed,
Butler & Co., Buffalo, in full
cloth, gilt and blind stamped,
a.e.g.; and are 3 1/16" tall in
the bindings. True, this is a
hair above the puristic limit for
minibooks; but I feel the outstanding
rarity of the Breed,
Butler imprints make it worthwhile
to pass along the information.
I am counting these
volumes as miniatures, and the
six titles in this set are listed
below:
1. Poetical Fortune Teller,
compiled by J.H.B.
2. Irving Gems, selected by
J.H.B.
3. The Mosaic, edited by
J.H.B.
4. Beauties of the Bible,
selected by J.H.B.
5.The Child's Bijou, edited
by J.H.B.
6. Gems of Fable, selected
by J.H.B.
II. Nazi Miniatures
Of the tiny booklets issued
by the German government
during World War II, only the
set of ten fairy tales ("Alte
Deutsche Volksmarchen"),
and possibly one or two of the
2 six song books ("Das DeutscheLied") can be separated from
propaganda, pure and simple.
The best known list of titles
totals 62; and there is another
group ("Zwolf Manner Am
Oberrhein"), of which I only
know the titles of six. While
the first 62 are quite scarce, the
latter 12 are spectacularly rare.
I had been busily gathering a
set of these titles for some years
before I realized that there
were a great many variants of
them. Some are perfectly plain
(a variant in and of itself);
while others are distinguished
by an imprint mark,
presumably signifying a
printer, which may appear at
the end of the contents, at the
end of the text, on the back
cover, etc. Furthermore, the
same title, under different imprints,
may appear quite differently:
- the cover photo may
be enlarged on one, giving
much less of the subject on that
cover than it does on another;
also, colors of ink on colored
covers sometimes vary considerably. While my collection does not
include any of the "Zwolf
Manner Am Oberrhein"; of
the 62 other titles of which I
am aware, I do have 140
copies, which include all but
one (Oskar von Boddien
-"Helden Der Wehrmacht"),
in from one to four variant imprints.
The imprints used on
copies in my collection, in addition
to eight plain copies, include
the following:
