NMR Study of 3He In Uranium Tritide

Description

The distribution of 3He atoms, which are formed by triton decay, in uranium tritide has been investigated by pulse NMR techniques. The spin concentrations, spin echo lineshapes, and nuclear relaxation times for 3He have been measured at room temperature. From the field dependence of the NMR linewidth and age dependence of the spin-spin relaxation time, we conclude that 3He is being trapped in microscopic gas bubbles (i.e., nominal dimensions ~<100 A) which expand to accomodate additional 3He atoms produced by continuing triton decay. The present results will be compared with recent observations for other metal tritides.
