SOME NOTES ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF
"A HATPHABEIP
by Frank J. Anderson
A Hatphabet is essentially an ABC book, using
,men's hats as a motif. The idea had been around
Kitemaug Press for several years. A one-of-a-kind
Hatphabet in ca. 2" x 2" format was produced in 1986. The
concertina format was used in 1997 for an MBS keepsake
titled Be Whatever You Are.
So things sort of jelled and a prototype for A
Hatphabet was produced on January 21, 1998. This is a
miniature book which takes advantage of the 8'Wh x 11'
standard paper size. The paper was ruled off in pencil and
pencil sketches for the various letters were made. When
the sketches were deemed satisfactory they were inked.
Then the captions (A is for Astrakhan, B is for Boater, C
is for Cap, etc.) were set in type and printed. The captions
were trimmed and glued under the images. Then a trip to
the Office Depot was made and the art work was
multiplied xerographically.
The sheets were then cut into strips and the
images colored with Prisma Colors. Following this the
strips (with three images per strip) were folded. Then the
nine strips comprising the entire alphabet were glued
together.
Next, boards had to be cut for covers. Cover
paper was cut to size. Cover labels, title labels and a
colophon sheet were printed. The cover boards were made
and the alphabet strips glued to the boards. After gluing,
the books were kept under light pressure for twenty-four
hours, so that the boards wouldn't warp.
The text paper used was Champion white; while
the cover and label papers are Wausau Geobrite.
Inspecting and numbering the books were the
final steps.
The entire process from prototype to completion
of the forty copy edition took one month. Of course the
Prop. wasn't working eight hours a day, every day, for a
month on the project. But, the World Headquarters of the
Kitemaug Press was aware that the 97th edition of the
press was underway.
A Hatphabet may be "read' page-by-page, or it
made be stretched out to its full six feet, four inches for
display purposes.
A Hatphabet is a truly mixed media, made-byhand,
production. There are slight flaws which testify to
the fact that the books were made by a human being, and
not by computer controlled machines. Perfection is the
prerogative of the Deity, and Frank Anderson wouldn't
insult the Deity by making a perfect anything.
A Hatphabet Spartanburg, Kitemaug
Press, 1998 ca. 2'k" high x 3" wide 26
pp., illus. hard covers a concertina
ABC book, which stretches out to
6'4" 40 copy-edition $40 ppd.
PUBLISHERS ALERT:
SLIDES NEIEDE FOR UPCOMING CONCLAVE
At the Conclave in Charleston, South Carolina
this year, I'm planning to give a slide talk to the attendees
highlighting the miniature books being produced today. I
think it is time for folks to see some of the great books
being made now, especially those who have not attended
the Conclaves. I would like to include as many miniature
book publishers as I can. Will you please send a slide or
two, or three, and a few words about yourself and the
book(s) so I can give an informative talk? Please label
your slides and send as soon as possible to:
