JANE CONNEEN began her art career
after her children were grown, starting with linocuts and
life-size pen-and-ink and watercolour botanical drawings.
Next, her work became smaller. . . and smaller . . .
and hand-coloured etchings her primary medium. For a
few years she concentrated on doll-house-size miniature
etchings, eventually finding this too limiting. Since then,
these hand-coloured etchings, both botanical and
architectural subjects, have been as large as five-to-six
inches but present image sizes are usually one to two
Besides wild flowers and herbs and garden
flower compositions, there are many small etchings
inspired by trips to Ireland, England, Spain, Nova Scotia
and Maine, as well as local architectural subjects.
Now miniature books (1Y2 to 2'h" readable
size) are taking over. The first one, printed by etching
press The Winding Roads of Ireland, received a
Distinguished book Award from The Miniature Book
Society and was accepted, along with The Language of
Herbs and The Lanuage of Herbs II, for The Art of the
Book '93, a two-year traveling exhibit sponsored by The
Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. Two more
books, Staiths: A Yorkshire Fishing Vilage and Violets
have been chosen for an exhibit at the National Library of
Canada, in Ottawa, in early 1995.
JANE CONNEEN's botanical drawings are in
the collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical
Documentation. She is a fellow of the International guild
of Miniature Artisans, a member of the Miniature Painters,
Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington, DC, the
Miniature Book Society and numerous other print,
miniature and book organizations. She is listed in Who's
Who in American Art.
