SWEARS IN NATION'S FIRST "GOVERNOR'S COMMISSION ON GAY AND LESBIAN YOUTH" WELD URGES COMMISSION TO CONDUCT FORMAL PUBLIC HEARINGS IN STATE HOUSE On June 11, at a ceremony at the Samaritins, a suicide prevention agency, in Boston, Mass., Governor William Weld formally created the "Governor's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth." The commission is the first of its kind in the United States. Weld and his lieutenant governor, Paul Cellucci, swore in the 27 members of the commission at the ceremony, which was attended by over 100 people, including a number of gay and lesbian high school students. Governor Weld appointed gay activist David LaFontaine, of the Massachusetts Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights, as Chair of the Gay and Lesbian Youth Commission. LaFontaine drafted the executive order creating the commission in consultation with the Weld administration. The commission will advise and make recommendations to Governor Weld and the Secretaries of Human Services, Education, and Communities and Development concerning creation of programs to counter the high rate of suicide among gay youth , and will address issues such as homelessness and violence against gay youth.
