Time Magazine has named the San Francisco Federal Building one of its 2007 "Best Inventions of the
Year [http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1677329_1678083_1678079,00.html] " winners in the
architecture category. Its citation noted that the building is "really a machine for delivering sunlight and
fresh air to the people who work there. Eighty-five percent of the work space gets natural sun, and
windows manned by computer let in outside air to maintain the building's temperature with a minimum of
air-conditioning."
The building's energy efficiency features were modeled by scientists in Berkeley Lab's Environmental
Energy Technologies Division using EnergyPlus software, led by Philip Haves, leader of the Commercial
Building Systems Group.
