During the spring of 1982, the National Marine Fisheries Service initiated a multiyear research program to define the effects of river conditions and dam operations on the current system (flow-net) in the forebay of John Day Dam on the Columbia River and to relate smolt passage behavior to the physical characteristics of the flow-net. Twelve digital, magnetic recording current meters were deployed in a grid within the restricted zone adjacent to the dam on 13 May 1982.
