There was no evidence of uranium hydride in the material after treatment.
Samples have been submitted for chemical analysis.
7. Urania-Europia
Urania and europia were combined, as have been previous materials,
to give 5 and 10 m/o of the rare earth oxide. After being pressed and sintered
at 17000C in hydrogen for four hours, pellets were tested at 23500C in dry
hydrogen. The 10m/o Eu01.5 sample lost an average weight of 1.900. There was
no change, as indicated by X-ray diffraction, in the solid solution as a result
of the higher temperature treatment. Small, slate gray patches appeared in
the microstructure of the material. There was evidence of thermal etching
of the material.
The exposed surfaces of the 5m/o Eu01 5-containing pellets were
covered with an extremely thin, brown, frangible layer. This material, as
well as the bulk sample, was of the fluorite structure. There is evidence of
a very slight change in lattice parameter between the two materials. The
slate-gray patches were also evident in this material. Heating the polished
specimen produced tarnish of some of the white spots, indicating possible
uranium metal formation.
D Cooperative Effort
Compacts of urania, thoria, dysprosia, gadolinia, urania-1im/o
gadolinia, urania-10m/o dysprosia, urania-10m/o thoria, and urania 10m/o
calcia have been fabricated and sintered at 1700 C in hydrogen for four
hours. These pellets will be evaluated for compatibility between these materials
and the tungsten cladding material. They are to be clad and then tested at
2500'0 in a thermogravimetric balance.
