Food Rule: Eat Healthy and Stay Active
Statement: My food rule is to live a healthy life style, eat healthy and stay active but not to
stress over the calories and weight, just simply be healthy and physically active daily. This
rule encourages just being yourself in a busy world, and if you enjoy a fast food meal then
treat yourself with one on occasion or having a processed snack after a month of good
eating habits won't kill you as long as your maintaining overall good health and staying fit.
My rule goes along with but also contradicts Chapter in the DGA; this chapter says to eat a
variety of colorful vegetables. My rule agrees you should eat a good variety of colorful
vegetables daily. Part of my rule is living healthy and staying fit, however missing a serving
of colorful vegetables isn't going to cause severe symptoms if not done regularly, even
substituting a serving of vegetables for fries will not be deadly, if not done daily. My rule
also supports and contradicts Michael Pollan's Rule #72, "Limit yours snacks to
unprocessed plant food." Having a good intake of plant food snacks should be done on the
regular. However with today's busy lifestyle that most Americans live, an occasional snack
from the vending machine when something's come up and you can't get to a plant food
snack is quite all right. Things come up daily so when you're hungry and don't have the
healthy snack you eat regularly a candy bar or chips will be okay as long as it's not a daily
occurrence. My rule encourages UNT students to stay active and make healthy eating
choices but not be a prisoner to only eating things that are considered healthy. By being
physically active and practicing good eating habits, going out to dinner and enjoying
yourself with friends is just something that's going to happen. As most college students
have bad eating habits anyways my rule is a little more flexible to the world today. I grade
my rule MODERATE, evidence from the DGA and Michael Pollan both suggest eating
healthy and staying fit are key to good health. My rule is a more modern spin on the
healthy living and a rule that most people do follow, because you only live once so
restricting yourself from the unhealthy foods you enjoy isn't realistic. If you're doing both
rewarding yourself every now and then with something more tasteful and enjoyable is
acceptable.
