Spring 2012 University of North Texas HMGT 1450. Principles of Nutrition Food Rule Written Statement File Number: S12562126 Food Rule: Beware of Food Amounts Statement: My rule is an example of "how you should eat." It reminds individuals to beware of the amount of food in which they are consuming. Most often times how much we need and how much we want are totally different. DGA Chapter 2 provides strong evidence that "when larger portion sizes are served, people tend to consume more calories" [And] that individual need to deliberately make food choices, both at home and away from home, that is nutrient dense, low in calories, and appropriate in portion size." If at all possible it is encouraged that one opts to eat a smaller serving and or choose lower calorie meals. Food Rule # 45 (Eat less.) and Food Rule #53 (Serve a proper portion and don't go back for seconds) coincides with my rule. Pollan states that "we [tend] to eat much more than our bodies need to be healthy." He says that we should only eat as much food as "would fit into a bowl formed by [one's] hands." He helps to encourage individuals not to over indulge. His rule, like DGA Chapter 2, suggests that we eat moderately. My rule also follows that concept. It inspires other UNT students to lessen the amount of food in which they eat to the fitting sizes, to help prevent the gaining of unwanted weight and or an unhealthy lifestyle. It also serves as a reminder to students that one can enjoy great foods without over consuming and maintain a healthy diet even while away from home. I grade my food rule as STRONG. There is information supporting the importance of portion control in Pollana6 s Food Rules as well as our DGA chapters.
