Acknowledgements
The dissertation is a process that is designed for graduate students to learn how to conduct
research by completing an independent research project. The current research project was an
independent research project in which the author can state that the work conducted was his own.
However, no research project is conducted in a vacuum and there are many people who I owe a
debt of gratitude for their teachings, support, patience, and understanding. As a learning process,
this dissertation has been a journey in which I have learned and gained a great deal of knowledge.
The acknowledgements are too numerous to state in this section, however the main influences to
my work are acknowledged here.
First and foremost, I must acknowledge the support and patience from my family during
this process. Specifically, the support, encouragement, and unwaivering belief that my wife, Dr.
Jana Miller Turner, provided through this journey. Not only did she provide support through the
dissertation process, but she encouraged me to continue through the entire doctoral program from
the very beginning. In addition, many thanks are in order for my son's understanding, Clark
Turner, and for his patience during this endeavor. Many sacrifices had been made from all of my
family members to allow me to complete this journey. Without their support, encouragement, and
sacrifice none of this would have been possible.
My ability to complete this dissertation, and to obtain a docorate degree, could not have
been possible without the support and teachings from my academic mentors. Dr. Jeff M. Allen
provided support in my abilities and has given me the freedom to pursue my research interests
throughout my tenure in the doctoral program. The confidence that Dr. Allen had in my abilities
provided me with the motivation to continue with this process, even through those difficult times.
Dr. Kim Nimon challenged me to be critical of all research as an effort to pursuit the truth.iii
