HON. EZRA TAFT BENSON,
Secretary of Agriculture.
DEAR MR. SECRETARY
In sending you my annual report last year I said that we were moving
toward more intensive multiple use management of national forests and greater
understanding of the need for this kind of management. I am glad to say that
in 1959 we made progress in those directions.
You sent to Congress the Program for the National Forests. I believe this
will be looked upon in the years ahead as a turning point in the management of
these public lands.
More people were beginning to talk about, support, and better understand
the need for multiple use land management and sustained yield of natural
Forestry research was broadened and strengthened as an essential part of
making forested areas meet the requirements of an expanding population.
There were other significant steps taken. These are discussed in our report.
We of the Forest Service appreciate your support of the Program for the
National Forests and your understanding of the vital need for the conservation
and development of the country's natural resources.
RICHARD E. MCARDLE,
Chief, Forest Service.
