A blazing oil-gas well in the East Texas town of
Hawkins throws flames into the air        for 20 miles
around.  The well burst into flames        late
yesterday and shot fire almost 100 feet into the air
throughout last night. Workers had been treating the
well, attempting to increase its flow of oil, when it
blew out with a roar. The well is in the center of
the small town and these films, by Texas Newsman Russ
Thornton, show the well at the height of its fury.
The flames were extinguished shortly before noon
today, 20 hours after the fire broke out.

LONG OF HOUSES

Throughout the night, firemen play streams of water on
buildings near the well. For a time, officials worried
about running out of water. Without the water, the
intense heat would have set the structures afire.
