The primary method employed was experimental. The fifth
grade of Wlnnetka School was chosen as a laboratory for the
^ark because of the daily contact of the writer of this thesis
with the children in the health class. Eighty children par-
ticipated in the experiment. The group consisted of children
whose homes were graded as excellent, good, fair, and poor
which established an average social and economic group. This
work was made possible by the assistance of the school nurse,
the school physicians, and the children with their parents.
Treatment of Data
A health habit record card was checked by each pupil for
each of five days in the week from October, 1938, to May, 1939.
During this six-month period a record of the weight was made
every four weeks and a record of the height was made every
twelve weeks. The health habit record card was then compared
with the height and weight records.
Questionnaires filled out by the children concerning home
conditions were cheeked and comparisons were aiade.
Personal interviews with parents, with the school nurse,
and with the school physicians aided in determining other in-
fluential elements such as physical defects and illness, all
of 'which were instrumental in rating the child's progress.
At the end of each month, records were tabulated and com-
parisons were made. The total records for the six-^onth period
