mI SLmm0u rlISSUE HIGHLIGHTS
During these stressful economic times,
with budget cuts in both private and
public sectors, it seemed appropriate
to address the matter in terms of our graduates
who are searching for jobs. The feature section
of this issue, titled Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, includes a
number of articles that focus on the situation
and attempt to provide suggestions and encour-
agement to ones seeking employment. Included
are articles identifying helpful sources of infor-
mation and other job search materials, letters
from the chairs of the two COI departments
offering their suggestions, listing of a few jobs
obtained by recent graduates, and the results of
a placement and salary survey. It is hoped that
job seekers will find these and other materials
contained in this issue to be helpful. Job seeking
is a job in itself requiring persistence and a great
deal of time.
Other articles of special interest include
a report of Dean Herman Totten's one year
appointment as UNT Vice President of
University and Community Affairs, and Dr.
Linda Schamber's appointment as acting dean of
the College of Information during the interim.
Reported also are UNT's memorandum of
understanding with a Chinese university, theapprovals of a new research cluster and an open
access policy, an update on the Pacific Region
cohort, and the LIS study abroad program in
Peru this summer. There is an announcement
of the exciting Places and Spaces Exhibit that
COI will host this next fall. There are feature
articles on several individuals, including Wendy
Beecham, the 2011 LIS Outstanding Alumni.
This issue reports an unusual number of awards
and other honors, and two of our own have been
named Library Journal Movers and Shakers,
joining eight others previously named to the
distinction. In addition, our readers will find the
usual sections reporting the activities of faculty,
staff, students and alumni.
I also would like to take this opportunity
to request that you send us your news-new
positions, promotions, publications, honors
and awards, election to offices, any changes in
your professional or personal life-along with
a photograph. We take great pride in your
accomplishments, and it is our pleasure to report
this information, which is of interest to the
faculty and your fellow graduates. You can reach
me at nichols2514@charter.net or you can send
your news to Jurhee Curtis, External Affairs andAlumni Relations, atjurhee.curtis@unt.edu.
Call Number is now in its 70th year. It start-
ed in 1939 as a three or four page mimeographed
newsletter produced by the office staff of what
was then called the Department of Library Ser-
vice in the College of Arts & Sciences. Melody
Kelly (MLS'73), who worked in the office when
she was a student in the early 1970s, recalls a
scary incident when her long hair got caught
in the roller of the hand cranked machine. Call
Number, which has been published several times
a year since that early date, except for a hiatus in
the late 1980s, has come a long way to its current
status as the alumni magazine for the College of
Information. It has been my pleasure to serve as
its editor for the past 23 years.
Please note that we have gone green. You
