Description

An experiment conducted at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center in November 1995 was used to benchmark tritium production calculations using the LAHET Code System (LCS). 800 MeV protons incident on tungsten targets, with a lead moderator/reflector, were used to create a neutron flux incident on aluminum spheres and capsules containing {sup 3}He for the production of tritium from the {sup 3}He(n,p) {sup 3}H reaction. Description

Tritium production was calculated in four aluminum spheres inserted into the central cavity of the target assembly, as well as several cylindrical capsules placed at different positions in the target assembly. Bare and cadmium covered gold foils were placed in the assembly, and calculations of {sup 198}Au production were compared to experimental measurements. Finally, nylon films were inserted in the beam path to record the beam profile through the exposure of the film. These beam profile measurements are also compared to LCS calculations.
