Improved separation techniques for the characterization of radioactive waste samples

Description

Analysts have routinely used organic solvent extractions and precipitation techniques to remove matrix constituents which interfere with the characterization of radioactive waste samples. Problems with these traditional techniques involve the production of organic waste and time consuming steps. Extraction chromatography using recently developed resins manufactured by Eichrom Industries provides accuracy comparable to traditional techniques while reducing waste and time. Three types of Eichrom resins were evaluated on samples from radioactive waste tanks at the Department of Energy`s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the analysis of the inorganic EPA target analyte elements, radioactive strontium, and radioactive technetium.
