On The Cover: Starting with the March issue of the Petroleum Supply Monthly, the
Energy Information Administration began a 12-month series of historic
photographs depicting the early days (1859-1920's) of the petroleum industry.
This early photograph shows at the turn of the century, geologists ridiculed the
concept that along the Gulf of Mexico, geological structures called salt domes
could contain oil. Everything changed with the discovery of oil at the salt dome
known as Spindletop in January 1901 that started the Texas oil boom. By August
1901, oil was discovered for the first time in Louisiana at the Jennings oil field,
and the oil boom became repeated many times over in salt domes along the Gulf
Coast. The prolific Jennings field (shown on the cover) peaked in 1906 at half the
maximum annual production of Spindletop, and its rapid rise catapulted Louisiana
into the ranks of the largest oil producing states; Louisiana remains a center of the
American oil and gas industry today.
