A DOBE, as a building material, has been employed in the southwestern
part of the United States since the time of the early
Spanish settlers. It consists of a mixture of clayey loam, straw or

other suitable bonding material, and water. When dried it becomes
hard and durable.
In the United States the use of sun-dried brick (fig. 1), which is
described and recommended in this bulletin, has almost entirely replaced
the older custom of piling the mud in layers on the wall.
