PLENUM PRESS HANDBOOKS OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE
MATERIALS. No. 2 - Properties Index, by G.V. Samsonov
Plenum Press, New York 1964. 418 pp
For the engineer and scientist, who must determine
the proper material for high-temperature
applications, and for the literature chemist,
who is hard pressed to supply these workers
with current, pertinent information, this book
with information on 600 refractory compounds
is a veritable gold mine. The Handbook is a
translation of a 1963 Russian publication.
The author divides refractory compounds into
the following fundamental classes:
1) compounds of metals with nonmetals, including
borides, carbides, nitrides, oxides,
silicides, phosphides, sulfides;
2) compounds of nonmetals with each other,
possibly carbides, nitrides, sulfides, phosphides
of boron and silicon, and alloys of
boron and silicon;
3) compounds of metals with each other, called
In the first five chapters, covering the character
of refractory compounds, the reader will
find data on their crystal structure, specific
gravity, thermochemical, thermal, electrical
and magnetic, optical, mechanical, chemical,
and refractory properties. Tabulated data in
the next two chapters provide useful information
on the resistance of refractory compounds to
various chemicals, molten media, and to oxidation.
Particulary intriguing is the last chapter,
which delineates current and potential applications
of refractory compounds in the metallurgical,
chemical and machine construction industries,
in power generation, and in automation,
radio, and electrical engineering. An Appendix
presents phase diagrams of systems in which
refractory compounds are formed.
