LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
[Editor's Note: Chemical Literature has not accepted
letters to the editor in the past. However, it
is felt that CL would perform a useful service by
doing so. Consequently, the Editor will accept for
publication letters of fewer than 200 words which
bear on some topic of interest to the Division of
Chemical Literature. Letters will be published at
the discretion of the Editor, who also reserves the
right to publish extracts of letters when space or
other considerations recommend against publication
of the full letter. All letters must be signed and
they must be received by the Editor at least six
weeks prior to the date of the Spring or Fall meeting
of the ACS in order for them to appear in the
Spring or Fall issue of CL as appropriate. Authors
of letters may request that their names not appear
in CL.]
Dear Sir: I am alarmed by the report of declining
Divisional membership in the Autumn issue and surprised
by the length of the membership list therein.
This Division is the most vital in the ACS in
the sense that we could probably get along without
organic chemists or water chemists or even chemical
management; but without literature and ready access
thereto, we are dead. Yet I find myself only
slightly interested in most of the papers presented
by the Division and am moved to the following comments,
intended to be helpful:
1. We are in pretty good shape as far as finding
