More and more frequently I am forced to face and recognize the
gap which exists between information chemists and chemists
whose careers have taken them into the classroom or laboratory.
There appears to be a lack of understanding as to what information
scientists do, and, significantly more serious, what information
tools are available. The majority of chemistry teachers are only
vaguely familiar with current information methods and this
vagueness is passed on to their students. Well-versed in the traditional
areas of chemistry, scores of new teachers and research
chemists enter the work force with only a rudimentary knowledge of
the information resources available. Due to captured interest a few
of these chemists will make the gradual transition to the information
field after initial experience elsewhere. However, a large
percentage of chemists will never understand the field or be fully
aware of its potential.
That a research chemist can achieve success and be ignorant of
current information methods is an unfortunate but common occurrence.
That those responsible for the guidance of future generations
of chemists should perpetuate such ignorance is even more
disheartening. But that we should allow either to continue is a
