SUBDIVISION OF CHEMISTRY AND THE LAW
The ACS meeting in Las Vegas has become history. I'am certain
we will be discussing Its implications for some time to come.
The subdivision of Chemistry and the Law was active in arranging
two symposia for the recent ACS meeting. The symposium on
"Update on Intellectual Industrial Property" was held on Monday,
August 25 with seven speakers. The sessions were well attended
and made for lively discussion. Plans are now being made to combine
these papers with a symposium held at the Washington, D.C.
ACS meeting last year and to publish all in a combined symposium
monograph.
A second symposium was held on Thursday, August 28 entitled
"Update of Specific Environmental and Workplace Laws." A
number of speakers connected with the San Francisco EPA did not
make the trip to Las Vegas, thus, a number of provided papers were
read by others. The session was well attended and provided some
Interesting discussion.
An information brochure describing the Subdivision of
"Chemistry and the Law" has been printed and copies are available
from me at the address below. We are actively seeking the new
members necessary for the Subdivision to apply for probationary
divisional status. In the future, we are considering two half-day Symposia at the
ACS meeting in Atlanta in March 1981. One half-day symposium
would be joint with the Division of Professional Relations entitled
"Legal Careers in Chemistry." Speakers would include discussion
of the background and career paths as a patent agent, patent attorney,
patent liason, environmental affairs officer, regulatory affairs
officer (FDA, DOT) etc. The second half-day symposium would
be papers and a forum on Hazardous Waste Disposal (RCRA) and
Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
Finally, for the ACS meeting in New York City, the Subdivision is
planning a one day technical session on chemical patent practice.
If you have additional symposium topics, please let me know.
