REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN
The New York meeting was successful beyond anyone's wildest
expectations. Attendance was often full to overflowing and the program
content excellent. Thanks again to Val Metanomski and his
The CINF Executive Committee has been involved the entire
month of September with a problem brought on by the periodic
reduction in size of the ACS Council. For 1982, 9 Sections and 4
Divisions will each lose one Councilor (and thereby one alternate
Councilor). We were caught with the news in New York too late to
reconvene the committee and with no bylaws to cover such situations.
Although the "simple" solution would have been to void this
year's elections, we decided to explore all possibilities. After much
deliberation, I have asked the Secretary to certify the following
slate for 1982:
Barbara Montague (thru 1982)
Carlos Bowman (thru 1983)
Bruno Vasta (thru 1982)
Peter Sorter (thru 1983)
Our three Councilors have been very active in Council affairs.
Barbara, immediate past-chairman of the Divisional Activities Committee,
has been appointed to the Committee on Committees.
Carlos is the new Chairman of the Divisional Activities Committee.
Peter is an associate member of the Chemical Abstracts Committee
and could become a full member.
I'm deeply disturbed by the whole situation, and I found it difficult
to work on. It was especially difficult to accept the request for
demotion by Peter and the resignations of the junior alternates, Ron
Dueltgen and Gaby Revesz. I've asked our Councilors to try to get
the Council to make these decisions (if necessary) earlier in the
year to avoid these difficulties for the affected groups. I'm also
writing ACS and expressing my feelings.
Past-Chairman Cynthia O'Donohue was unable to attend either
National meeting this year. Therefore, we were unable to present
her past-chairman's pin in person. However, it has been sent, along
with the thanks of the Division for her service.
After the good news and the bad news, I'd like to thank everyone
for their support, encouragement, and assistance the past two
years. Please keep up the good work for Jean Marcali. In addition to
your support for the Division at the national level, including the National
Meetings, please consider opportunities at the local,
regional, and intersociety level, which fall under the mission of Ivan
Pascal's Liaison Committee.
