REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN
After years of reading other chairmen's columns, I'm finally confronted with the task of composing my own.
First, I want to thank Jean Marcali for the terrific job she did last year (and the previous five years also)! Her planning
and leadership will make my job much easier. I'm looking forward to the videotape she is making for the
Next, I want to acknowledge the fine work of your previous CIB Editor, Bonnie Lawlor. During her five years as
editor, Bonnie has spent many hours gathering copy and publishing a superior newsletter for CINF. Our new
editor is Marge Matthews, also of ISI, and we welcome her. Also new is our Business Manager, Anne Backman.
Please support the CIB with news items and advertising. Again, thanks ISI for your support of the CIB.
Now to some ideas I have regarding CINF. Arleen SomervUle has agreed to chair the new Education Committee.
Its charter will be discussed at our Seattle Executive Committee meeting. I would like CINF to: 1) aid college
and university professors and/or librarians in teaching the use of chemical information; 2) interact with other
ACS bodies, such as the Committee on Professional Training (CPT), whose missions include teaching chemical
information; 3) assist industrial information centers in educating their scientists in the use of chemical information.
My involvement in helping to teach a chemical information course at Rohm and Haas Company and in interacting
with CPT these last few years has made me realize how important the Education Committee's mission
will be to all of us. Arleen and I welcome your ideas concerning the Committee.
As Chairman of CINF I will continue to encourage interaction with related information societies and other ACS
Divisions and Committees. Our program chairman, Val Metanomski, has been doing an excellent job in this area.
CINF is represented on the Copyright, Chemical Abstracts Service, and Publications Committees, whose decisions
affect all of us in our work. Our new Liaison Committee Chairman, Bob Peraza, is anxious to foster more
participation in regional and jointly sponsored meetings. Our membership contains many experienced information
professionals and has much to offer other groups. Contact Val or Bob with your suggestions or to volunteer
to assist in programming.
In this Chemical Information Bulletin, you will find a list of new officers and committee Chairmen and
members. Contact these people, too, with your ideas and help CINF become a stronger, more memberresponsive
Division. CINF is only as strong as its members. Your participation is vital and I encourage any of you
who wish to become more active to phone or write me. If CINF is to maintain or even accelerate its level of activity,
we must have new blood and new ideas.
I am looking forward to our Seattle meeting in March. We have an excellent technical program and some
special events planned. Our Tuesday luncheon will be cosponsored by COMP and features Tom Isenhour, the
new Editor of the Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences. Tuesday evening we will cosponsor a
wine tasting and buffet at the Ste. Michelle Winery. This should be a good opportunity to get acquainted with
your fellow CINF members as well as colleagues from Iota Sigma Pi, the Copyright Committee, and the probationary
Division of Chemistry and the Law. Sign up early for these two ticketed events.
Thanks for electing me as your Chairman. I'm looking forward to a busy, exciting year and to meeting you.
