FORMATION OF THE CHEMICAL INFORMATION DIVISIONS
OF THE GERMAN AND JAPANESE CHEMICAL SOCIETIES
In the past year, two chemical societies, the Gesellschaft
Deutscher Chemiker and the Chemical Society of Japan established
Divisions of Chemical Information.
The Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker formed the Division of
Chemical Information (Fachgruppe Chemie-lnformation) in September
1982. Its first chairman is Dr. Robert Fugmann of Hoechst AG.
The Division is publishing a newsletter (Mitteilungsblatt) under the
editorship of Drs. Robert Fugmann and Ekkehard Fluck. The first Divisional
Conference will take place in Frankfurt am Main on October
27-28, 1983. Its program is listed on page 24.
The Chemical Society of Japan formed the Division of Chemical
Information and Computer Science in January 1983. Its first chairman
is Professor Shin'ichi Sasaki of the Toyohaski University of
Technology. The Division had its first meeting during the 48th National
Meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan in Kyoto on April 1,
The ACS Division of Chemical Information is very pleased that
additional forums have been created at which new developments
can be reported and ideas exchanged on topics of interest in our
field. Our Division extends congratulations and best wishes to the
two new Divisions of Chemical Information. Their organizers attended
our meetings in the past and presented papers in our symposia.
We are certain that the beneficial contact established over
the years will continue.
GMELIN-BEILSTEIN MEMORIAL MEDAL AWARDED
TO ROBERT FUGMANN AND ERNST MEYER
The Board of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) has
announced the award of the Gmelin-Beilstein Memorial Medal in
1983 to Drs. Robert Fugmann and Ernst Meyer in recognition of
their great contributions to the field of chemical literature. The
Award will be presented in Frankfurt on October 27, 1983.
Dr. Fugmann was the Herman Skolnik Awardee in 1982. Another
Herman Skolnik Awardee, Dr. Fred A. Tate, was awarded
posthumously the Gmelin-Beilstein Medal in 1981.

GARFIELD RECEIVES AWARD IN COLUMBUS
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Eugene Garfield,
President and founder of the Institute for Scientific Information'
has been chosen recipient of the 1983 Austin M. Patterson-E.J.
Crane Award for contributions to the documentation of chemistry.
This award is presented every two years by the Dayton and Columbus
Sections of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Garfield has
succeeded in making scientific information readily accessible to
the world's chemical research community through such publications
as Index Chemicus, Current Contents, and Science Citation
Indext This Award was presented at a banquet on Monday, May 16,
1983, at the Monte Carlo Ristorante, 6333 Cleveland Avenue at 1270
North, Columbus, Ohio.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR JOURNAL?
Most of the readers of this Bulletin are familiar with the Journal of
Chemical Information and Computer Sciences, formerly known as
the Journal of Chemical Documentation and the Journal of
Chemical Information. The name changes are indicative of the
foresight of its longstanding editor Dr. Skolnik. Herman guided the
Journal for over 20 years from its birth until mid 1983. The inclusion
in the title of Computer Sciences was a recognition of the
emergence of computers in chemistry and an effort to provide a
place for the publication within the American Chemical Society of
research In this area.
Upon Dr. Skolnik's retirement, Dr. Thomas Isenhour was appointed
Editor of the Journal. Dr. Isenhour is a well recognized analytical
chemist who has made use of computers intensively in his
research. Dr. Isenhour asked me to serve as an Associate Editor so
that together we could span the large area covered by chemical information
and computer sciences. Dr. Isenhour has planned some
changes for the Journal.
These are intended to strengthen and broaden the Journal and
build on the solid foundation developed by Dr. Skolnik. Among
some of the changes are the inclusion of feature articles which will
present a more comprehensive view of a topic. Book reviews will be
included also and Dr. Peter Jurs has been appointed Editor for this
section. Increased efforts to receive appropriate advertising are
Long time subscribers will notice a very definite increase and orientation
towards articles and papers dealing with computers and their
use in chemistry. However, there is no intention to diminish or
neglect those areas which have been traditionally reported and
discussed in the Journal. If you have noticed a decrease in the
number of chemical information papers, it is not because of an
editorial decision to do so but because of a significant decrease in
the number of such papers being submitted for publication.
I believe that one of my responsibilities as the Associate Editor is to
see that chemical information is adequately covered by the Journal.
The members of the Division of Chemical Information can help by
taking their time to prepare papers on their current work and sub.
mitting them for publication to the Journal. In addition, suggestions
as to topics which may be of interest for consideration as feature
articles are most welcome. We also would appreciate knowing of
books that you feel should be reviewed.
There are exciting things in store for the Journal, but in the final
analysis your contributions will shape it and determine its orientation.
