Bolo Cynwyd * PA * 19004"Chemical Structures: The International Language
of Chemistry" is the theme of the May 31 to June 4,
1987, international chemical-information conference
to be held in Noordwijerkhout, The Netherlands. The
conference is cosponsored by the American Chemical
Society's Division of Chemical Information, the
Chemical Structure Association (U.K.), and the
Chemical Information Groups of the German Chemical
Society and the Royal Chemical Society (U.K.).
Technical sessions will cover integrated, in-house
information-retrieval systems, substructure and
generic structure searching, new technologies applied
to chemical information, databanks, chemical reaction
indexing and retrieval and synthesis planning, and the
requirements for chemical-information systems of the
1990s. There will also be poster sessions for general
papers and workshops dealing with selecting
structure-handling software, generic structures,
chemical reaction and synthesis planning systems,
chemical text processing and electronic publishing,
structure-activity relationships, and databanks. The
conference will bring together international experts
and chemical-information professionals to discuss and
to further basic and applied reseach and development
in the processing, storage, retrieval, and use of
chemical structures. The Leeuwenhorst Congress Center will be the site
of the conference. The registration fee of $350
(Df l 870) includes full room and board at the Center.
(After January 15, 1987, the fee will increase 20%.)
Registrations close on March 31, 1987.

W. CONARD FERNELIUS (1905-1986)
Dr. W. Conard Fernelius, an internationally known
inorganic chemist and a dedicated educator, died
unexpectedly in Kent, Ohio, on June 30, 1986. Educated
at Carnegie-Mellon and Stanford Universities, he
served on the faculties of The Ohio State, Purdue,
Syracuse, Pennsylvania State, South Florida, and Kent
State Universities. His industrial experience included
research activities at the Monsanto and Koppers
Companies.
In 1981, Dr. Fernelius was awarded the PattersonCrane
Award of the ACS Columbus and Dayton Sections
for his leadership in the development of inorganic
chemical nomenclature. He was a member of
the IUPAC Commission on the Nomenclature of Inorganic
Chemistry for 23 years including four years
as Chairman. His other contributions to chemical
literature and documentation included writing and
publishing five books and over 200 articles, serving
as an abstractor and section editor for Chemical
Abstracts, and serving on the editorial boards of Inorganic
Syntheses, Chemical Reviews, Journal of
Chemical Education, and other leading journals in the
fields of inorganic and nuclear chemistry.
His association with the ACS Division of Chemical Information
goes back to the days when its predecessor,
the Chemical Literature Group of the ACS Division of
Chemical Education, held symposia on chemical nomenclature.
Two of his earliest papers were "Some
problems of inorganic chemical nomenclature" presented at the 112th ACS National Meeting in New York
on September 16, 1947, and "The nomenclature of
coordination compounds" presented at the 120th ACS
National Meeting in New York on September 6, 1951.8 CHEMICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN
