As I reflect on the activities of the Chemical Information Division in 1990, it is gratifying to review all that
was accomplished. I would like to thank all of the officers, committee chairs and members, sponsors and
volunteers for helping the Division function so smoothly. I would like to give special thanks to the organizations
and individuals who place ads in the Bulletin, and to Ron Dueltgen, the Business Manager, for
all of his help.
Membership activities remain a high priority for the Division. As you scan the membership directory in
this issue, make a note of people you know with an interest in chemical information who are not listed.
Then, invite them to join. Marianne Brogan, Membership Chairman, will be happy to provide you with
membership information or to send such information to prospective members.
Recruiting new members is certainly a priority, but retaining existing members is equally important. We
feel this is best done by offering members something of benefit. The Division's programming, publications,
awards, and committee projects are aimed at creating those benefits. If you have suggestions for benefits
you would like the Division to provide, please forward them to me or one of the other functionaries listed
on the last page of this Bulletin.
Some of the highlights of 1990 include:
* Participated in the 2nd International Conference on Chemical Information, Noordwijkerhout, the
Netherlands. Arranged jointly by the Chemical Information groups of the ACS, the Gesellschaft
Deutscher Chemiker and the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Chemical Structure Association,
and the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society. There will be a published proceedings.
* Participated in the Tri-society Symposium on "putting Technology to Work in the World of Chemical
Information", Pittsburgh, PA. Arranged jointly by the Chemical Information groups o the
ACS, ASIS, and SLA.
* Planned a symposium on "The Emergence and Growth of Chemical Information and the Chemical
Information Scientist" for the Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM), Newark, DE in the Spring
* Presented the Herman Skolnik award to Dr. Ernst Meyer, formerly of BASF-AG, Germany. Dr.
Meyer played a pioneering role in revolutionizing chemical information handling through the use
of computer methodology.
* Awarded the Student Scholarship to Eric Johnson, School of Information Studies, Syracuse University.
* Completed a Citation Searching module.
* Several division members have been actively involved in the ASTM Standards Development Subcommittees
on Chemical Databases. The three subcommittees are: E49.51 on Chemical
Structural Information, E49.52 on Experimental Data Interchange, and E49.53 on Data Exchange
for Physical/Chemical Quantities. For further information contact Wendy Dyer, ASTM (215)2995400.
It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as CINF Chairman during 1990. It is clear that the division
is successful because of the volunteers and the organizations that support them. It is with great confidence
that I turn the reins over. Your officers for 1990 are: Bettijoyce Lide, Chairman; Joseph Clark, Chair- elect;
Victoria Veach, Secretary; Marianne Brogan, Assistant Secretary; Patricia Dedert, Treasurer; Peter Rusch and
Arleen Somerville, Councilors; Carlos Bowman and Robert Buntrock, Alternate Councilors. Give them your
support, suggestions, and criticisms.
