Message from the Chair
Greetings! It is a real pleasure to serve as Chair of this Division. Though I know many members, I look forward
using this opportunity to get to know more of you. I am also interested in hearing your ideas to make the Division
better meet your needs. There are five things that I want to focus on during this coming year:
* Survey CINF members to help shape how Division resources can be used to most effectively meet members
* Enhance the CINF Membership Directory in order to offer additional ways to search the Directory.
* Continue efforts to seek funding in support of technical programs and social events.
* Explore how to make more effective use of the web to share our expertise, ideas and tips with one another.
* Work to increase the number of new members and to expand participation of current members.
Please contact me if you have a special interest in helping with any of these efforts. My email address is
Looking ahead to the ACS Meeting coming up in Anaheim, the CINF Program Committee has worked hard to
assemble an excellent selection of symposia. There's something for everyone! Symposia topics include: Chemical
Information Sources on the WWW; Digital Libraries; Information in Catalysis, Petroleum, Polymers; Data Mining
in Chemical Information Databases; Modeling and Analysis through the Internet; Techniques & Pharmacophore
Development; Economics of Chemistry Journals; Alternative Careers in Chemistry; and posters at the Sci-Mix
session. On Sunday, March 21st, from 1-5pm, the Education Committee of CINF will be holding a workshop on
Teaching Chemical Information. Please see these URLs for more details and for registration information of the
While plans for social events are still being firmed up, efforts are underway to have the CINF Welcoming Reception
on Sunday night at the Wax Museum. Check at the Marriott to confirm the final location of this Reception.
Committees will meet on Saturday morning, March 20, 1999 at the Marriott Hotel. With the exception of the
Executive Meeting, all committee sessions are open to the membership and we invite you to attend these sessions.
While committee members' work very hard to provide the best possible services and programs for the Division, we
need your input to insure that the diversity of needs are being met. If you are unable to attend, please feel free to
send me comments and suggestions prior to the meeting.
The Boston meeting was very memorable. The rooms were packed for the Skolnik Award Symposium and the 50th
Anniversary Reception for the Division was the CINF party of this century. If you haven't seen them yet, you
should check out the CINF Milestones and the Chronology of Chemical Information Science that are available at
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all committee members and officers of the division who have worked
so hard to make the Chemical Information Division THE organization for chemical information professionals. They
are a very dedicated and talented group of people! They are a real pleasure to work with and I strongly encourage
you to consider investing your time in the Division. You will find it well worth your effort!
I look forward to seeing you in Anaheim. Cheers!
