Message from the Chair
Dear CINF Friends and Colleagues:
It was wonderful seeing many of you in San Diego! I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the
CINF volunteers who made that meeting so successful. I'd especially like to thank the symposium
organizers for putting together a great technical program. Be sure to check out the web site to see
materials from many of these presentations (http://www.acs-cinf.org/22 1nm/abstracts_221 .html). Thanks
also to all of the sponsors for our meeting who so generously supported our welcoming reception,
technical sessions and other social events. The list of sponsors may also be found on the web site
By the time you read this, the Fourth National Chemical Information Symposium will have taken place in
Waterville ME at Colby College. I was especially pleased to be involved in the organization of this event,
which allowed chemical information specialists from all sectors (academic, industrial, consultant,
producer, etc.) to meet and discuss topics and issues in chemical information that are shaping the present
and the future of our profession. Details about the conference program are available at
Now, on to Chicago! I hope that many of you attending the meeting will take have some extra time to
spend in my town! In addition to providing information on the ACS National Meeting and CINF events,
I've prepared a list of links for things to see and do while you're in "my" neighborhood (http://www.acscinf.org/222nm/tourist_info.html).
During the ACS meeting, be sure to make plans to attend the various
social events and division-wide meetings: the CINF Welcoming Reception on Sunday evening, Herman
Skolnik award symposium and reception on Tuesday (honoring this year's recipient, Guenter Grethe), the
CINF annual business meeting and open Chemical Abstracts Service/ACS Publications meeting on
Monday afternoon, and the luncheon on Tuesday. Details about these events can be found on the CINF
website (http://www.acs-cinf.org/acs_upcoming.html -- see the technical session and social events links)
and in the printed program in C&EN.
I would like to take a moment to thank all CINF members for making my term as Chair such a rewarding
and pleasant duty. I've had the opportunity to meet many new colleagues, work more closely with the
various CINF functionaries, learn more about ACS and its functions, and face many new challenges. I
want to encourage any members who would like to become more involved in the division to do so. You
can contact me or any of the other officers and functionaries of the division to find out more. There is a
way for everyone to participate -- no contribution is too small. If you are not able to attend ACS National
Meetings, you might consider contributing articles to the CINF E-NEWS (newsletter), helping with web
page markup, working with CINF to arrange workshops and/or programs at regional or local section
meetings, etc. If you are ready for a larger commitment, consider volunteering for one of our committees.
There are opportunities for everyone to be involved, whether or not you can attend national meetings.
So, I look forward to seeing many of you in Chicago. If you can't be there, I do hope that if you have
ideas and suggestions for the division, you will contact me. The current and the incoming officers need
your input to keep CINF focused on members.
