Messagefrom the Chair
We had a very busy and successful 2005 under the leadership of Eileen Shanbrom. She has certainly raised the
bar and now it is up to us to continue to perform at or above that level. Some of the many accomplishments of
the last six months include the following:
* The CINF-IO Informatics Scholarship for students has been implemented and the first three awards were
handed out at the last ACS Meeting at Washington DC. Applications for the upcoming meeting at Atlanta
are in progress.
* Hugo Kubinyi will be the recipient of the next Herman Skolnik Award (in Fall ACS Meeting in San
* The second meeting of the CINF-CIC (Chemie-Information-Computer Division of German Chemical
Society) was held in Germany. Various Task forces were formed. The Committee will organize a joint
symposium at the San Francisco ACS Meeting.
* C&EN covered some of our symposia from the DC Meeting. (See October 10, 2005, Volume 83, Number
41, pp. 52-53.)
* Two members of CINF are now providing leadership as the chairs of the ACS Committees Joint with
Council: Chemical Abstract Services and Publications.
* "CINF E-News" became an open access publication.
* CINF was the recipient of the ACS ChemLuminary Award in 2005.
Our technical programming is maintaining its high-quality, diverse, and multi-disciplinary nature. Many of our
symposia are co-sponsored and co-listed in many other division programs. For example at Washington DC our
symposia were listed at the programs of CHAL, CHED, YCC, COMP, MEDI, and ENVR. In addition, we have
jointly organized a symposium with COMP Division entitled "Advances in Data Mining and Analysis". One
symposium at CINF provided the "Informatics Perspective" and one in COMP provided the "Computational
Perspective" and the symposia were programmed back-to-back concluding with a round-table discussion
In the upcoming meeting at Atlanta, we are presenting 96 papers in 12 symposia with co-sponsorships including
CHED, YCC, IEC, PHYS, SCHB, CHAL, COMP, MEDI, ORGN, and an external sponsorship with the CSA
Trust. The cosponsor list above shows how diverse and broad our reach is. In San Francisco we will also
jointly organize a symposium with the German CIC Division.
At a time when ACS is pushing very hard for multi-disciplinary activities, our Division is providing exemplary
I would like to invite you to our breakfast and Long-Range Planning Meeting starting at 7:30 am Saturday at
Atlanta. Following the Long-Range Planning, we will start the Committee Meetings. I look forward to seeing
you all in Atlanta.
