I am very grateful to Dr. Patrick Brandt, Dr. John Booth, and Dr. Alexander Tan, who
formed my advisory committee. Their mentoring went far beyond this thesis and enabled
me to grow intellectually during my time at the University of North Texas. I thank Dr.
Brandt for sharpening my thinking about research and for the patient support he provided
for this thesis and for my teaching. I have been fortunate to be able to listen to Dr. Tan's
and Dr. Booth's accounts of their rich academic and life experiences. The high personal and
professional standards set by my committee as well as by my other two academic mentors,
Dr. Mason and Dr. Tieslau, will serve as an inspiration to me. Cece Hannah has always been
very supportive of me. Overall, I have enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in the Department of
Political Science very much and I am thankful to all the faculty for having been able to study
and work here. I very much appreciate the way my friends and fellow students encouraged
me during my time at the University of North Texas. I would like to thank my parents for
their love and support even after I chose to get my education so far away from home.
Rachel Burlage deserves special thanks for proofreading large parts of this work. I am
obliged to Patrick McLeod for helping to typeset the first political science thesis in IATEX at
the University of North Texas. Finally, I am indebted to the Graduate Reader, Jill Waite,
for her expeditious work.
