ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
First, I would like to express sincere thanks to my advisor, Dr. Jesus Rosales-Ruiz whose
honesty, feedback, and guidance made this project a success. Thank you for providing me with
challenging learning opportunities and professional development lessons- it was a true shaping
process for us both! Thank you also to Dr. Shahla Ala'i-Rosales, who provided me with an initial
idea that turned into a grand vision. I truly appreciate your instruction, particularly during the
developing stages of this project. Your knowledge has been an inspiration to me. I am also
grateful to Dr. Sigrid Glenn for taking the time to serve on my thesis committee and providing
feedback that greatly improved the quality of my thesis. Thank you for your valuable insight.
I would like to extend a very special thank you to the families and children who
participated in this study; thank you for opening your homes and hearts to me. Your commitment
and dedication made this project possible. I also owe many thanks Veronica Delgado and Curtis
Harris for always being so dependable. Thank you both for your friendship and your time.
A heartfelt thank you to Benny Ward whose support and humor often made even my
darkest days seem brighter. Your friendship has been invaluable to me and has helped shape me
into the person I am today. Thank you for giving me strength, thank you for being my rock.
And finally, a very special thank you to my family. Without your encouragement,
support, and financial resources, this dream would not have been possible.iii
