If you're walking on
the UNT campus,
don't be surprised if
you see a flash of pure
white among the gray
bushy squirrel tails in
the trees. UNT is
home to a rare albino
squirrel, believed to
be living just behind
Willis Library. Nick-
named Precious,
Blanca, Thelonius and
Enya by admirers, the
squirrel is the object
of affection of UNT's
chapter of the Albino
Squirrel Preservation
Society. The 76-mem-
ber group - open to
faculty, staff, students
and alumni - tries to
raise awareness of the
unique creature
through its web site,
orgs.unt.edu/asps.
"He's something that
makes our campus
different, and seeing
him just lifts your
spirits," says society
president and founder
T.J. Zambrano, junior
hospitality manage-
ment major from
Denton.

Hackers beware
UNT's Computer
Privacy and Security
Lab has been recog-
nized as one of the
best computer security
teams in the world,
placing second in the
Honeynet Project's
"Reverse Challenge"
- the only academic
team to rank in the
top five. Stephen Tate,
associate professor
of computer sciences,
and three graduate
students competed
in the second annualcompetition, which
pitted teams against
malicious software
that allows hackers
remote access to a
computer. Competi-
tors had to isolate,
nullify and take apart
the virus to under-
stand what it could
have done. The 35
teams included secu-
rity professionals,
students, system
administrators and
interested individuals
from around the
world. Only one other
academic team, from
Purdue University,
placed in the top 20. >"While we must address the root
causes of terrorism, we also have to
tackle daily the battle against terror-
ism. It's an extremely difficult task, in
part because you only know when
you have failed. Because of the
nature of the threat, successes are
much more difficult to identify."
