More than 50 others were injured, 32 of tnem
seriously.
The heat from the explosion set fire to a railroad
bridge a quarter of a mile away -- set fire to the
hair of a newsman standing near the bridge --- and
severely burned a workman protected by a metal
shack 300 yards from the tank.
Tonight officials and workers stand back,
watching thanks, hoping the fire burns
itself out before the wind shifts. A cinange in
wind direction and other nearby tanks -- one M
already bulged by the heat, will explode.
To eliminate the danger of additional death or
injury, no one is permitted within hundreds of
yards of tne fire.
