He felt the financial difference, in that he did not have
the allowance that A. had.
He needed sympathetio understanding and the feeling of
having a father that recognized and wanted him.
Treatment.--As Douglas Thorn brings out, *A child should
be taught habits of unselfishness in the home. He should
learn to share. He must learn to acknowledge superior skill
and a difference in the home environments of people.'20
Feeling that this was a home problem and could be settled
by a sympathetic mother if looked into, the teacher arranged
an interview with D.D.'s mother. It was found that she knew
very little about the trouble. D.D. had told her that he
was not playing with A. any more because A. was angry with
him. She was sorry that she had not done anything about
this and gave the excuse of working and thinking it was a
childish quarrel. She consented to do anything that would
help the boy adjust himself. The teacher suggested that she
talk with D.D. about the matter and show him why he was not
playing with the boys and impress on him the fact that he was
welcome to go back as soon as he overcame his bad habit.
There was to be no soolding but a simple talk telling him
that swearing was an immature and inappropriate language for
a person. bRuth Strang says, "The boy should think of swearing
not as something that distinguishes him as a man of the world,20Thom, e22 .it, p. 179.
