I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to my advisor,
Dr. Sajal K. Das. Without his guidance, support, and encouragement, this dis-
sertation would not have been written. He introduced me to the field of parallel
algorithm, taught me how to do research, and advised me through many hours of
helpful discussions and suggestions. His attitude towards work and people, and
his respect for other peoples' ideas set a good example for me to learn. I believe
what I have learned from him will benefit me greatly.
I am thankful to the members of my Ph.D. committee - Professor Paul Fisher,
Professor C. C. Yang, Dr. Roy T. Jacob, Dr. Neal Brand - and several other
faculty members of the Computer Science Department at the University of North
Texas. Their expectations always push me up a step further. Special thanks are
due to Professor C. C. Yang and Dr. Gene Lewis. From their classes, I got much
inspiration for doing research.
I am indebted to my father Chiu-Hsing Chen and Gloria's brother-in-law Yuan
Ching Yao. Their expectations, support, and constant encouragement have mo-
tivated me in pursuing a Ph.D. degree. They had been eagerly waiting to see me
receive a Ph.D. Unfortunately, both of them passed away in the middle of my
study in the Ph.D. program at the University of North Texas.
I would like to dedicate this dissertation to my son Leon. His understanding
and confidence in me have helped me brave through many adversities in my life.
