Outcome Measure Interactions. Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical
Psychology), August, 1981, 118 pp., 4 tables, 1 illustration,

It was hypothesized that effect size in therapy outcome
research would correlate positively with congruence effects.
Congruence was defined as the degree to which what had been
practiced in treatment was scored as improvement when outcome
was measured. Additionally, it was hypothesized that correct-
ing effect sizes for estimated nongeneralizable change
attributable to congruence (i.e., representativeness reduc-
tion) would significantly reduce the average magnitude of
effect.
From a sample of 88 outcome studies a total of 346
treatment-outcome combinations with their respective effect
sizes was obtained and rated for congruence and representa-
tiveness reduction. Interrater reliability correlations for
the congruence and representativeness reduction estimates of
the experimenter and those of a selected rater were r = .47,
p < .000 and r = .25, p < .000 respectively. Agreement (com-
puted for no difference in estimates) between the experimenter
and the selected rater with regard to congruence and represen-
tativeness reduction was y^2 (1) = 100.26 , p < .001, and x2(D =
42.49, p < .001 respectively. Correlations between congruence
and effect size ranged between r = .18 and r = .25 (p < .005)
