Notes

This hat was designed to be part of an ensemble created for Claudia Heard de Osborne to wear to a particular wedding in Europe.

In donor's description for related dress, Ms. de Osborne wrote: "Beige heavenly heavy silk (please touch this silk) and its black satin tie belt and its heavy beige lace bolero. Hat for this is in separate box. It is a fine big beige straw hat with a little beige rose on edge of brim at back. Balenciaga made this especially for me for a big and very important wedding of a young French Princess to a Spanish Grandee. Balenciaga said he knew all the Spaniards would be loaded down with a lot of ruffles and such and he wanted me to be very simple and chic. The wedding was in a chapel next to the famous Chateau Anet and the reception in the chateau and its grounds. (The bride's family own the Chateau Anet.) The Count and Countess de Paris were there, also the Duke de Orleans and Duchess and important guests from all over Europe."
