This is Ron Marcello with a bad case of laryngitis
interviewing General Russell Waldron for the North
Texas State University Oral History Collection. The
interview is taking place on December 7, 1980, in
Orlando, Florida. I'm interviewing General Waldron
in order to get his reminiscenses and experiences
and impressions while he was a member of the 31st
Bombardment Squadron at Hickam Field during the
Japanese attack there on December 7, 1941.
Now, General Waldron, to begin this interview,
very briefly give me a biographical sketch of yourself.
In other words, tell me when you were born, where you
were born, your education--things of that nature.
Just be very brief and general.
I was born in Wellston, Ohio, on April 8, 1910. My
father and mother died when I was quite young, and
I became an orphan and went to live with my grandparents
and went to elementary school in the ol' country
school. It had eight grades, potbelly stove, and a
recitation bench. I graduated from high school and
