She may be seen by any one, a great strapping Irish [En-
glish] woman selling tape and other like articles in a shop on a
public corner of the plaza.
But I must conclude as it is nearly day and I leave as soon as
it is light.
Give my love to all. I remain,
Yours affectionately,
Theodore
As with most rumors in war time, there was some-but only
some-truth to the rumor of General Taylor's success at Buena
Vista. His force of approximately 4,600 men was indeed out-
numbered by Santa Anna, who sent an estimated 15,000 men
into battle. Once again, it was the American artillery that helped
win the contest. After two days of fierce fighting, Santa Anna
decided to lead his men south again. The Americans lost about
fourteen percent of their strength in killed, wounded, and miss-
ing. The much larger Mexican force lost almost a fourth of its
men. American losses were 272 killed, 387 wounded, and six
missing. Santa Anna admitted to losing 591 killed, 1,048
wounded, and 1,894 missing.'
Lieutenant Laidley has obviously overcome his slight tinge
of doubt, expressed near the end of his letter of February 26,
1847, about the ability of Scott's force to capture Veracruz.1K. Jack Bauer, The Mexican War (New York: Macmillan, 1974), 209, 217.
