January 1992
1992. Wasn't there a movie or something about this year, or was that 1990? I can't remember.
It was based on some book. I think. The great thinkers never believe we'll make it as far as we do.
Remember 1Jga by George Orwell? We're all supposed to be miserable and destitute by now. In a way I
get a bit of satisfaction from proving people wrong. It's childish, I know, but this is my column, and you'll
have to get over it.
Since January is upon us I thought I'd offer a few suggestions for new year's resolutions -- for
those of you who are into that sort of thing. (Yes, some people actually make them and stick to them.)
First of all, the perennial halting of drug and/or alcohol abuse is a good one. Don't misunderstand. I
don't mean to sound glib. I know many people who try to escape their lives with a bottle, and I know how
often they've tried to quit. But getting things right on the inside first is always the best way to deal with
them. Adding a load of "stuff' from the outside pushes us further and further from reality, and it doesn't
exactly help the immune system either.
Another good resolution might be to improve communication with our
physicians so that we could have a better, more productive relationship. It's
R o n 's mportant to always be as honest as possible with your physician, no matter
O ff S how brave or lucky you happen to be feeling. Even if we have negative
feelings toward our health professionals at times, we can receive the best
care they have to offer and enjoy the benefits of their knowledge by
R o o m maintaining an open, rational method of conversation with them. So do your
part. Help them help you, and insist on knowing what's going on with those
cells -- don't be dismissed with, "Everything's fine", or "Just trust me." It is
your body after all.
Finally, the best thing we can resolve to do is to stay healthy. Just don't get sick. Take charge and
do whatever you must, be it altering your lifestyle or therapy in some way, or visualizing little HIV cells
running like hell from huge, mighty T cells. Whatever it takes, just refuse to let your HIV status destroy
your attitude, because if that happens, your body won't be far behind.
I never gave him credit for being so together (largely because I, like many other people, forget that
famous people are actually people with real lives and real problems), but Magic Johnson made a
statement on TV the other night that seemed very insightful. He said, 'Yes, it happened, but I have to
deal with what's going on now. This is where I am now, and I can't worry about how or why I got here," or
something to that effect. Being thrown a curve like HIV is what really separates the men from the boys.
It's all in the clumsiness or grace with which we choose to handle it, and I'd say we could all use a dose of
the Magic Johnson attitude.
At any rate making new year's resolutions, though it's moved into the holiday realm of the Easter
bunny and Jack-o-lanterns, is a good way to keep moving forward. It means you're taking positive steps,
and there's nothing better than that for your body or your spirit. Stay healthy.
