Dear Dr. Redding:

Congratulations on receiving funding for
legislature! You must be very pleased.

TAMS from the Texas

Enclosed is a copy of a call for proposals concerning grants
offered under the Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education
Program. I'm planning to apply for a grant to fund the
activities of SMPY at UNT; perhaps you would like to write a
proposal to fund some TAMS projects. I think it would be even
better if we combined our efforts into a joint TAMS/SMPY at UNT
I haven't had a chance to do much work on a proposal yet.
However, some of the projects I am considering include:
1. Saturday math classes for talented elementary students
in the Denton area.
2. A 3-week summer program in precalculus mathematics for
junior high students.
3. Identifying and providing services to the "SMPY Texas
Honors Group." Texas students will be eligible for the
group by scoring 500 or above on the math part of the
SAT before the age of 13. Services will include
newsletters, mini-conferences, and individual
educational counseling via phone or letter.
4. Fellowships for teachers to work with TAMS and SMPY at
UNT while completing coursework for a master's at UNT.
5. Research projects such as studying the social/emotional
aspects of entering college early using TAMS students
and a comparison group of 18-year-old UNT freshmen.
6. Information dissemination: In addition to sending
newsletters to individuals in the SMPY Texas Honors
Group and providing information to TAMS students,
perhaps we should consider offering workshops for
teachers (e.g., I could do one on SMPY's Diagnostic
