At the First Annual Dinner of the
Cleveland Chemical Profession (Nov.
29, 1949), Past ACS President Linus
Pauling said that men of science have
the right to speak about social and
civic problems, but often hesitate to
do so because of their fear of dis-
charge by their employers. He stated
that to have good relations between
nations, we must have good relations
between scientists; and he censured
the State Department for its blanket
refusal to permit scientists from cer-
tain countries to visit the U.S. because
of the political policies of the coun-
tries themselves. He predicted that
perhaps the major advances in chem-
istry would come with the develop-
ment of the ability to know the chem-
istry of drug action and the ability to
predict compound behavior, thereby
placing medicine on a scientific basis.
Dr. Paul Jean Delahay, formerly
of the University of Oregon, has come
to LSU as Assistant Professor of
Chemistry.{
