MARCHAND, continued from page 2
After he completed his Ph.D. work with
Dewar, he took a post- doctoral appointment
with Andrew Streitweiser at UC-Berkeley. He
then joined the chemistry faculty at the
University of Oklahoma in 1966. It was there
that he met his future wife Nancy, who was an
entering graduate student. After completing a
Master's degree in organic chemistry, Nancy
switched to pharmacy. She continues to work
in this area.
Alan began working on cage compounds
in 1973. He believes the cage compounds
have a number of interesting facets. They are
a source of synthetic intermediates that are
difficult to access otherwise, and they are good
for studying transannular interactions, which
are commonplace in these systems. They are
also interesting substrates for intramolecular
carbocation rearrangements. Finally, they are
a new source of energy-rich compounds. It is
surprising to learn that cage compounds can
be made in multi-pound quantities in two steps
from two common chemicals, cyclopen-
tadiene and Dpa-benzoquinone.
After coming to UNT as Professor of
Chemistry in 1982, Alan was appointed Dis-
tinguished Research Professor of Chemistry
in 1986. He has authored or coauthored over
140 scientific publications. He has taken a
year off from his duties at UNT (although he
continues to run his research group long dis-
tance) to serve as Program Officer for Organic
Chemical Dynamics at NSF. While he misses
working in research day-to-day, he has the
compensation of seeing the best science in the
world pass through his office. He will return
to UNT for the upcoming academic year.
I can testify that Alan is a great com-
panion at scientific meetings. Besides his skill
in music, he is very facile at foreign languages.
He speaks several languages fluently, among
them Chinese. I am looking forward to hear-
ing his Doherty Award lecture to be given at
the Meeting-In-Miniature at UT-Dallas on
Friday, April 26th. The title of his lecture is
"Synthesis of Unnatural Products: From
Caged Compounds to Molecular Clefts".YOU DON'T NEED A BIG STAFF

Project SEED Needs
Your Support!
Project SEED is the nations leading pro-
gram for introducing economically disad-
vantaged high school students to careers in-
volving laboratory research. Since 1968,
Project SEED has provided stipends and sum-
mer research opportunities for more than 2700
students at universities, corporations and
government laboratories across the country.
Project SEED depends principally on private
funds. Your financial support is what makes
it possible. Contributions may be mailed to:
