We must all be alert to the downsizing that is occurring in today's
modern military and the impact that it will have on Fort Leonard Wood.
Fort Leonard Wood is a $500 million industry, the largest employer in
Central Missouri and a significant contributor to the economic vitality of
the State of Missouri.
The post contributes significantly to the military mission of the United
States of America and it is aggressively seeking new missions to ensure
the future success of the installation.
All of you in the nearby host communities have: played an important
role in the success of Fort Leonard Wood because of your willingness to
change. Dating to World War II when you built highways and provided
services, you have accepted all assignments from the Department of
Defense with enthusiasm and vigor.
Now it is imperative that the Base Realignment and Closure
Commission is aware that the State of Missouri fully supports Fort
Leonard Wood and welcomes any new training missions that stand to be
consolidated or relocated.
Governor Mel Carnahan is playing a key leadership role during this
decision-making process. Senators Kit Bond and John Ashcroft are helping
every way they can in Washington. And, of course, U.S. Representative
Ike Skelton for years has done an outstanding job representing us and
Fort Leonard Wood in Congress.
We present this profile to you in booklet form so you can be informed
and aware of the military value of Fort Leonard Wood. We ask that you
assist our efforts in any way that you can to ensure the future success of
Fort Leonard Wood.
