At their recent meeting, the Directors approved a number of unusually large grants that
accounted for a major portion of available funds. For that reason, we were severely limited
in the total number of programs and projects that could be funded at this time.
Sad to say, they were not able to approve a grant to North Texas for the Texas Academy of
Mathematics and Science, much as we share your view of the great importance of the
establishment of such an institution., Comments were favorable and, therefore, I do think
there is a possibility of reconsideration, not within this calendar year, but shortly thereafter.
I firmly believe in what you are trying to do and will continue the battle as best I can.
Sometime before, the end of the year, I would like to come up for another visit and hope
that we could take another look very early in '88.
