8. Describe your SIG's participation in other noteworthy activities during the
period (e.g., participation in a public effort, such as, legislative hearing,
standards committee, representation at meetings of other organizations,
etc.).
- SIG-III submitted a formal proposal to reduce membership fees for
members and potential members from certain developing countries and
the ASIS&T Board of Directors has unanimously accepted and approved
it.
Accordingly, individuals residing in countries categorized annually by
the United Nations as "medium" or "low" with respect to human
development will be eligible to pay reduced membership fees ($40 per
year). The details in published Inside ASIS&T, (Page 7 of
February/March 2012 - Volume 38, Number 3 - issue of ASIS&T
Bulletin.) ASIS&T president Diane Sonnenwald wrote about it in her
presdents' message of both Volume 38 No. 3 and No. 4 issues of
ASIS&T Bulletins.
- SIG-III launched our Twitter account (@sig3i) in June 2012. We
undertook the Twitter account to encourage and facilitate international
information exchanges among ASIS&T members and to highlight and
promote research done by SIG members and other colleagues. To
celebrate the official launch of our Twitter account and to encourage
people to follow us, we conducted a random draw among our Twitter
followers. Isabella Peters (@lsabella83) from Heinrich-Heine-Universitat
Duesseldorf in Germany is the winner of a $50 Amazon.com gift card.
- Infoshare program: ASIS&T is a truly international professional society
that actively recruits members from all over the world. As part of this
effort, the ASIS&T International Information Issues Special Interest
Group (SIG-III), through its InfoShare Program, has been recruiting and
sponsoring professional and student members from a number of
developing countries. This year, we received 16 nominations and, after a
vote by SIG-III officers, awarded nine (9) of them full membership
benefits for one year (9 professional and 3 student memberships). The
InfoShare award recipients not only come from seven (7) different
countries, but they are also diverse in their professional and
educational backgrounds. With the new $40 ASIS&T membership fee for
developing countries, we will be able to support even more colleagues
for whom the cost of membership would otherwise be a financial
burden.
- International Paper Contest: SIG III held its twelfth competition for
papers from information science scholars and practitioners in
developing countries. For the past 12 years, SIG-III has been organizing9
