Description

Satirical Print of English preacher, political advisor and soldier who supported the Parliamentary cause during the English Civil War. The engraving, circa. 1600, shows Hugh Peters with a devil on his back with each foot on a stack of books that correspond to church and state while he holds the ties to bags of money that are labeled with "Revenue", "Plunder", "Thimbles" and "Benefices". Symbols of the monarchy and the church appear on the floor by his feet.

Notes

Hugh Peters (1598- 1660) was a highly influential English preacher, political advisor and soldier who supported the Parliamentary cause during the English Civil War (1642–1651). From a radically Protestant family of Cornwall, England, though of part Dutch origin, Peters emigrated to a Puritan colony in America, where he first rose to prominence. After spending time in Holland, he returned to England and became a close associate and propagandist for Oliver Cromwell. Peters may have been the first to propose the trial and execution of Charles I and was believed to have assisted at the beheading. Peters unsuccessfully proposed revolutionary changes that would have disestablished the Church of England's role in landholding and strike at the heart of the legal title to property.
